Milton Goldberg

Educational Consultant

Milt Goldberg is a recognized leader in education policy and research. Currently, he is a consultant on education issues for business corporations and education organizations. As a speaker and writer, Dr. Goldberg discusses the relationship between education excellence and the nation's social and economic well-being. He currently serves on the boards of the National Center for Adult Literacy at the University of Pennsylvania; the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing at the University of California at Los Angeles; the National Board on Professional Teaching Standards; the Albert Shanker Institute; the George Lucas Education Foundation; and Jones International University. Dr. Goldberg was former executive vice president of the National Alliance of Business, an organization of business leaders dedicated to the improvement of American education. From 1977 — 1995, he held various leadership positions in the U.S. Department of Education. He was Deputy Assistant Secretary from 1979 — 1980. In 1981, he was named the executive director of the National Commission on Excellence in Education. The National Commission issued the landmark report, A Nation at Risk — a report generally credited with starting the nationwide education reform movement.

As director of the Office of Research in 1989, he was instrumental in the development of the national education goals for President George H. W. Bush's education summit with the governors. In 1994, he was appointed the executive director of the congressionally created National Education Commission on Time and Learning. The Time Commission released the report, Prisoners of Time, which explored ways to improve student learning in and out of school. As an education practitioner, Dr. Goldberg was a teacher and administrator with the Philadelphia Public Schools and taught education history and philosophy at Temple University and Chestnut Hill College. Dr. Goldberg has been a U. S. representative at international conferences on curriculum, urban education, and youth and vocations. Dr. Goldberg received a master's degree in English Literature and a doctorate in Education Curriculum and Instruction from Temple University in Pennsylvania.
